SPIDERS

Make your home a spider-free zone

Australia is a place of many wonders and our spider habitation is one of them.  While we are generally okay that we share our country with spiders, we are not happy to share our homes with them, and for good reason.  Australia is home to some of the most deadly spiders in the world, and even those without dangerous venom still cause real trouble for many people in the form of phobias.

Spiders commonly enter homes in two primary ways: entering through open, poorly screened windows and doors and through cracks and gaps around door and window frames. Most of the time, spiders come inside the home looking for prey. The other common method of entry is accidentally hitchhiking inside boxes, on outdoor items and numerous other things that are brought inside a home or business.

Queensland is a particularly favorable area for spiders due to its climate. The spiders native to Brisbane and surrounding areas can be lethal to humans, so making sure your home is spider-free should be your goal.

Locating spiders in your home

Finding the exact spots where spiders are in your home is a mission impossible for amateurs. You need the help of a pest professional to find them and treat the area, as the biggest problem with spiders is that there are lots of different species. Different species have different habits – some prefer dark, moist places, while some can be found in hot and dry areas.

This means that they can be hiding anywhere. You might not even notice their presence as some of them don’t even create webs. So, how can you know if there’s a spider infestation in your home if there are no webs as proof? The answer is – you can’t, but we can. We at Progressive Pest use the latest technology to locate not only spiders but other pests alike. Once we find them, we will proceed to the next step, which is their elimination.

How to get rid of spiders?

You can try to remove spiders from your home on your own, but if they keep on appearing, you need to call a professional for assistance. Some proven methods include vacuuming and cleaning your home of any webs. The problem with this approach is that you will get rid of only those spiders that you can see, but what about those that are good at hiding?

In order to get those spiders as well, you need to lure them out. You can do this by setting traps, which include their favourite meals – flies, mosquitoes and other insects. Alternatively, you can make the spiders abandon your home on their own by cutting their food supply, that is, removing all the insects from your home. You can do this by using insecticide, which may also be efficient in killing spiders.

Still, you can go through all of this trouble only to see spiders appearing again after a few days. The reason for that is that you didn’t destroy their eggs; and that’s no easy task.

Most dangerous spiders live in Australia

There are more than 2,400 species of spiders in Australia. The good news is that not all of them are dangerous to humans. In fact, a huge majority of them do not pose any threat. However, there are about 50 of them that can cause you harm. Some of the deadliest are the following:

  • Sydney funnel-web spider (Atrax robustus)
  • Northern tree funnel-web spider (Hadronyche formidabilis)
  • Orb-weaver spider (Eriophora sp.)
  • Huntsman spider (Sparassidae)
  • Recluse spider (Loxosceles reclusa)
  • Tarantula
  • White-tailed spider (Lampona cylindrata)
  • Trap door spiders (Idiopidae family)
  • Mouse spider (Missulena sp.)

The funnel-web spider is the most dangerous spider in Australia. This species is responsible for the most human deaths caused by spiders. The bad news doesn’t end there – the funnel-web spider is commonly found in Queensland!

Our spider control services

Once our team locate the areas where the spiders might be, they will use an approved chemical solution to kill both the adult spiders and their eggs. Our people will make sure to treat your whole home with anti-spider solutions, including tiny holes in walls, floors and windows, where some types of spiders can hide. This way, we’ll make sure there are no spiders left alive when we finish our work.

Prevention techniques

At Progressive Pest Control, we believe in an integrated approach to pest control. That means using a combination of safe chemical solutions, as well as implementing lifestyle changes. The most important thing to do is to keep your home free of insects as that way spiders won’t have anything to eat.
