Now that the weather has started to cool down in Brisbane, our clients find that most summertime pests are starting to subside. During warmer months, some pests increase their breeding and activities which means there’s more of them being more visible. But that doesn’t mean your home will instantly become pest-free just because the temperature has dropped.

In fact, the beginning of cooler weather means that there’s a new (and possibly more problematic) pest on our radar; rodents.

What rodents to look out for in cooler months?

Winter is known as rodent season due to their increase in activity. Our warm homes, stocked with food is the perfect place for a rodent to hide from the colder temperatures.

In Australia, rodents include animals classified as a rat, mouse or rabbit.  There are a number of rodents we target in the Brisbane area, including:

  • The House Mouse
  • The Brown (or Norway) Rat
  • The Roof Rat

What are the risks of rodents?

There are a number of direct risks to the health of humans and property at the hands of rodents. These include:

  • Consuming and contaminating food
  • Physically damaging your home
  • Spreading disease
  • Attracting snakes

And if you’re a workplace, this doesn’t take into account aspects such as:

  • Risking your health & safety status
  • Damaging your reputation
  • Putting your customers and employees at risk

How to prevent rodents in your home or workplace

At Progressive Pest Management, we take an integrated and humane approach to pest control. That means that we don’t rely on chemicals alone to solve your rodent problem.

We recommend the following treatments for rodent control in your home or workplace:

1. Protect your rubbish

Store your rubbish in bins with tight fitting lids. Household and workplace rubbish is a major drawcard for rodents.

2. Lock up the pet food

Don’t leave pet food around for animals to graze. Sure your dog might enjoy going back to his bowl throughout the day and evening, but so does that rat!

3. Rodent-proof

It sometimes only takes a hole 1cm in diameter to let a mouse into a building. Seal up any holes with mesh gauze and around your windows and doors with suitable weather seals.

4. Work with a professional

Progressive Pest Management has a number of safe treatments to get rid of rodents in your home or office. For example, we can install tamper-resistant rodent stations to house bait blocks, yet ensure kids and pets stay safe, implement trapping plans and more.
